False Gospels

God warned us that there would be many false teachers that would distort the Gospel. In fact, in Galatians Paul tells us that if anyone preaches a false Gospel they are to be accursed by God:

I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!” Galatians 1:6-9

Satan is still at work and he loves to twist the Gospel to deceive people into thinking that they are right with God when, in fact, they are not. There are many false Gospels today. We will identify a few:

Roman Catholicism

The official doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church can be found in the Council of Trent. This was a gathering of about 40  clergymen, mainly Bishops, that met 25 times over 18 years. Their purpose was to set forth official Roman Catholic doctrine in response to the Protestant Reformation. During the 6th session, the Council of Trent issued declarations about “justification” or how someone is forgiven of their sins and made right with God. It states:

“CANON XXIV.-If any one saith, that the justice received is not preserved and also increased before God through good works; but that the said works are merely the fruits and signs of Justification obtained, but not a cause of the increase thereof; let him be anathema.”
